As I am sitting here, writing this blog, a couple of magpies are building a nest in the tree outside my window. Watching these birds building their cosy nest warms my heart and reminds me that spring is most definitely on its way.

Nature has a way of instinctively and seamlessly move in step with the seasons. Spring is the season of hope and new beginnings. A beautiful reminder that it’s okay to let go of the past and start looking towards the future.

As is easy as it is for the birds and the bees to start afresh, we humans have a tougher time to let go of the old and start something new.

We welcome the return of the sun and enjoy watching nature spring back to life. Our hearts are filled with renewed energy and positive intentions for the future. But once the initial excitement wears off, we are back to our old patterns and habits.

Why do we struggle to let go of the past and what is stopping us from moving on?

 

Letting go is hard

Change is always scary. Especially when you don’t know what is coming next. That’s why you might find yourself holding on to unwanted patterns and habits, because it’s familiar and known to you.

Who knows what would happen if you were to let go? What would come in its place? And also, would you be able to handle it?

It’s this fear of the unknown that stops most of us from letting go of the past and moving on.

 

Acknowledge your emotions

We get used to having certain emotions, even negative ones. These emotions impact us on a daily basis, without even noticing it. To us, it simply feels as if we are reacting like anyone else to any given situation.

It’s easy to forget that our emotions are a product of our past and our life experiences.

Being aware of your emotions and acknowledging them without judgement, is an important first step to being able to let go of the past.

 

Shift your focus

Being aware of negative emotions from the past is a great first step. But simply being aware of them won’t make them go away. In fact, the more you are aware of them and give them attention, the more they can grow.

Whatever we give our attention to grows. If you focus on happiness, joy, and satisfaction, you’ll experience more of that. If you focus on pain, regret, and guilt, you’ll experience more of that.

Have you ever tried to rid yourself of stress, only to have found yourself getting more stressed, especially when you knew you shouldn’t stress? Or have you told yourself to stop worrying, only to have found more things to worry about? 

The same goes for letting go of the past. Unless you’re able to truly let it go, you’re more likely to focus on the negative emotions surrounding it. Instead of letting it go, you end up drawing more of it into your life.

You cannot reject or push against the past. You cannot focus on a problem and find the solution. Because the solution is never where the problem is. So, you need to shift focus away from the past and towards a bright new future.

We can’t change our past and what happened to us, but we can change the way we feel about it. Letting go of negative emotions from the past is the first step to moving on in your life.
