Here are some questions on hypnotherapy and hypnosis that I regularly get. If your question isn’t included, please get in touch.
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of heightened focus and concentration of the conscious and unconscious mind. Your mind is so focussed that you can become unaware of your surroundings and bring your attention onto just one thought, almost like a daydream. Remember in school when you were younger, sometimes your mind would just drift off and you’d be lost in your thoughts and daydreams and you would completely forget about your teacher and the class. This is a form of hypnosis. You can induce this by yourself or with the help of someone else. In this heightened state of focus, you can be more suggestible and open to change.
What happens during a session?
Every session will start with a little chat about why you’ve come to see me and what you would like some help with. This part will take a little longer during the initial session so that we can get to know each other and to be able to get a clear assessment of your current issues.
Before any hypnosis begins, I will let you know what I think would be the best course of action. If there is anything that you are not comfortable with, you can let me know and I’ll adjust things accordingly. Even though I will be guiding you through the hypnosis, it is you who is in control of your treatment.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis is a very personal experience and not everyone will feel the same way. However, in order to reach a state of hypnosis, I will guide you into a comfortable state of relaxation. Most of the time, hypnosis will just feel like you are relaxing.
Will I remember everything?
Some people remember everything, some people remember only certain bits. Being able to remember what happened during a session has no impact on the efficacy of the treatment.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No. Even in a hypnotic state, you are in complete control and you can get yourself out of hypnosis whenever you want.
